Practical tips for managing the emotional strain that can come with the holiday season for Veterans.

For most, the holidays are labeled as ‘the best time of the year,’ a time of togetherness and celebration. But for many Veterans it can bring feelings of anxiety, stress and emotional strain. However, there are practical ways Veterans can manage these feelings and find ways for peace during the season.
Practical Tips for Managing Stress and Anxiety
Establish a routine:
Sticking to a familiar routine daily can provide comfort and stability for Veterans during a time that may feel like chaos. Maintaining sleep patterns, meal times and daily hobbies can reduce the feelings of stress and add a more sense of control.
Set realistic expectations:
The holidays look different for everyone. It's important to set realistic expectations for yourself and your loved ones. Instead, focus on small and meaningful moments rather than worrying about having a picture-perfect holiday.
Limit social media exposure;
In today’s world, social media is known to amplify feelings of inadequacy or loneliness. During this time, Veterans should limit their time on social media which reduces comparison and prevents unnecessary stress.
Reach out for support:
For many Veterans, isolation can be a challenge during the holidays, but they don't have to deal with it alone. Reaching out to family, friends, mental health resources or fellow Veterans, which can provide a sense of connection and understanding, helping them feel less alone.
The holidays don't have to bring up that impending sense of anxiety and stress for you. By understanding the challenges that Veterans face and taking small steps to manage those feelings, it's possible to navigate the holiday season with a more peaceful approach.
